There are a total of 5 Coaching Education Levels in USA Hockey:

  • Level 1 - Initiation (No pre-requisites)
  • Level 2 – Associate (pre-requisite Level 1)
  • Level 3 – Intermediate (pre-requisite Levels 1 & 2)
  • Level 4 – Advanced (pre-requisite Level 1, 2, & 3)
  • Level 5 – Master (pre-requisite Level 1, 2, 3, & 4)

You must recertify (successfully complete one class) every three years until attaining the Advanced Level.  There is no further education required once you attain the Advanced Level.

Click here for the Clinic Schedule on the USA Hockey Website.

Here is an overview of the Patching requirements for coaches at each level of play as it has been presented at the meetings:

                                                  Coaching Education Level

Level of Play                            (Head Coach & Assistant Coaches)

Mite A & B                              Level 2(Associate) if 1st year coach

Level 3(Intermediate) if 2nd year coach

Mite C                                      Level 2 (Associate)

Squirts                                      Level 3 (Intermediate)

PeeWees                                  Level 3 (Intermediate)

Bantams                                    Level 3 (Intermediate)

Midgets                                     Level 3 (Intermediate)

Level 4 (Advanced) if team is National Tournament Bound

Girls U12/U14/U16                    Level 3 (Intermediate)

To qualify as a head coach or assistant coach on an approved roster, you must attain the appropriate USA Hockey Coaching Education Program qualification level by November 1st for Bantam & Midget levels and by December 31st for Mites through PeeWee levels.

You can take the courses out of order.  However you will not be given a USA Hockey Coaches Education Program (CEP) card and a CEP number for that level until you complete all of the pre-requisite levels.  So if you take the Intermediate course first you will not be recognized by USA Hockey as having attained that level until you complete the Initiation and Associate classes.

Additional Notes:

  • Coaches that need to recertify for Level III can do so on line on the USA Hockey web site.
  • You will be required to write your Level and your CEP number on each game sheet.
  • If you have any questions about your current Level you may contact the Mass Hockey Coaching Coordinator, Nick DeMarco, by phone (508-339-6537) or email ( ).  He maintains the local database (I am told) and can provide you with information about your official status with USA Hockey.  Also check the Mass Hockey web site for more information.
